UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72302: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: SOF: ipc3-control: Use overflow checks in controlupdate size calc In sofipc3controlupdate(), the expectedsize calculation uses firmware-provided cdata->numelems in arithmetic that could overflow on 32-bit platforms, wrapping to a small value. This would allow the cdata->rhdr.hdr.size comparison to pass with mismatched sizes, potentially leading to out-of-bounds access in sndsofupdatecontrol. Use checkmuloverflow() and checkaddoverflow() to detect and reject overflowed size calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most exposed to this issue?
The overflow is described as occurring on 32-bit platforms. The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop.
What access does an attacker need?
The severity vector indicates local attack access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. Exploitation involves firmware-provided control data with a num_elems value that causes the size calculation to overflow.
What happens if the vulnerable size check is bypassed?
An integer overflow can wrap the expected control-data size to a small value, allowing a mismatched header size comparison to pass. This can potentially lead to an out-of-bounds access in snd_sof_update_control.
