UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72304: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: SOF: ipc4-control: Fix TOCTOU in sofipc4bytesput In sofipc4bytesput(), the copy size is derived from the old data->size in the buffer rather than the incoming new data's size field from ucontrol. If the new data has a different size, the copy uses the wrong length: it may truncate valid data or copy stale bytes. Fix by validating and using the incoming data's sofabihdr.size from ucontrol before copying.

In sof_ipc4_bytes_put(), validate and use the incoming data's sof_abi_hdr.size from ucontrol to determine the copy length before copying, rather than using the old data->size in the buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
The affected Ubuntu kernel packages listed are linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop. Exploitation is local and requires low privileges.
What does an attacker need to do to exploit it?
An attacker needs local access and an account with low privileges. No user interaction is required.
What is the potential impact?
The issue is rated high severity with a CVSS score of 7.8. It can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability at a high level.
What is the underlying condition that triggers the flaw?
The vulnerable control path handles incoming data whose sof_abi_hdr.size differs from the size already stored in the buffer. The prior behavior used the old buffered size for copying, which could truncate valid data or copy stale bytes.
