UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72312: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Aug 15, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: octeontx2-af: fix VF bringup affecting PF promiscuous state Mbox handling of nixsetrxmode for a VF with promiscuous and allmulti flags set to false causes deletion of the PF's promiscuous and allmulti MCAM rules. This occurs because the APIs that enable/disable these rules operate only on the PF, even when the mbox request is made via a VF interface. Guard both rvunpcenableallmultientry() and rvunpcenablepromiscentry() disable paths with an isvf() check so that a VF bringing up or tearing down its interface cannot inadvertently clear the PF's MCAM rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel package with the octeontx2-af driver and SR-IOV virtual functions are relevant. The issue requires a PF/VF arrangement in which a VF can send mailbox requests that change its receive mode.

2

What must an attacker or tenant be able to do to trigger the problem?

They need local, low-privileged access through a VF interface and must bring the VF interface up or down while its promiscuous and all-multicast flags are false. This can cause the PF's promiscuous and all-multicast MCAM rules to be deleted.

3

What is the operational impact?

A VF action can unintentionally clear packet-filtering rules configured for the physical function. This affects the PF's promiscuous and all-multicast receive behavior and can cause availability impact.

4

What can be done before a patched kernel is installed?

Avoid assigning or exposing affected VFs to untrusted local users or tenants, and avoid VF bringup or teardown operations where possible. Monitor PF promiscuous and all-multicast configuration after VF interface state changes.
