UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72316: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm era: fix NULL pointer dereference in metadataopen() metadataopen() returns NULL when kzallocobj() fails, but the caller eractr() only checks ISERR(md). Since ISERR(NULL) returns false, the NULL pointer is treated as a valid result and later assigned to era->md, leading to a NULL pointer dereference when the metadata is accessed. Fix this by returning ERRPTR(-ENOMEM) on allocation failure, consistent with dm-cache-metadata.c, dm-thin-metadata.c, and dm-clone-metadata.c which all use ERRPTR(-ENOMEM) for the same pattern.

Update dm era metadata_open() so that kzalloc_obj() allocation failure returns ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM) instead of NULL, matching dm-cache-metadata.c, dm-thin-metadata.c, and dm-clone-metadata.c.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What condition is required for the crash path to occur?
The metadata object allocation in metadata_open() must fail. The vulnerable caller treats the resulting NULL value as valid, which can later cause a NULL pointer dereference when metadata is accessed.
What does the fix change?
On allocation failure, metadata_open() returns ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM) rather than NULL. This allows era_ctr() to recognize the error through its existing IS_ERR() check instead of retaining an invalid metadata pointer.
