UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72318: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: validate DFS referral string offsets parsedfsreferrals() validates that the response header and referral array fit in the received buffer, but each referral also contains string offsets supplied by the server. Those offsets are used to compute the DfsPath and NetworkAddress string pointers without checking whether they still point inside the response buffer. A malformed referral can therefore make the computed pointer exceed the end of the buffer. The resulting negative maxlen is then passed to cifsstrndupfromutf16(), and the non-Unicode path forwards it to kstrndup() as a sizet, allowing strnlen() to read out of bounds. Validate each string offset before deriving the string pointer.

In the CIFS DFS referral parser, validate each server-supplied string offset before deriving the DfsPath and NetworkAddress string pointers, ensuring they remain inside the received response buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger this issue?
An attacker controlling, or able to provide malicious responses from, a CIFS/SMB DFS server can supply a malformed DFS referral. Exploitation requires a client interaction with the attacker-controlled referral response.
What is the impact of a malformed referral?
Malformed server-supplied string offsets can cause the kernel CIFS client to calculate pointers beyond the received response buffer. This can lead to an out-of-bounds read when the referral strings are processed.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-oracle.
