UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72330: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/tls: Consume empty data records in tlsswreadsock() A peer may send a zero-length TLS applicationdata record; TLS 1.3 explicitly permits these as a traffic-analysis countermeasure (RFC 8446, Section 5.1). After decryption such a record has fulllen == 0. tlsswreadsock() hands it to the readactor, which has no payload to consume and returns zero. The loop treats a zero return as backpressure (used <= 0), requeues the skb at the head of rxlist, and stops. rxlist is serviced head-first on the next call, so the empty record is dequeued, fails the same way, and is requeued again; every later record on the connection is blocked behind it. tlsswrecvmsg() does not stall on this: a zero-length data record copies nothing and falls through to consumeskb(). Mirror that in the readsock() path by recognizing an empty data record before the actor runs, consuming it, and continuing.

Update tls_sw_read_sock() to recognize an empty TLS application_data record before invoking the read_actor, consume the record, and continue processing subsequent records instead of returning zero and requeuing the skb.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this denial of service?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages and the kernel TLS software receive path are exposed when they receive TLS application data through that path. The issue can block processing of all later records on an affected connection.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the problem?
An attacker only needs to act as a TLS peer and send a zero-length TLS application_data record. No privileges or user interaction are required according to the provided severity vector.
Are empty TLS application data records valid traffic?
Yes. TLS 1.3 explicitly permits zero-length application_data records as a traffic-analysis countermeasure, so affected systems must safely handle them rather than assuming they are malformed.
How can I recognize the impact on an affected connection?
After a zero-length TLS application_data record is received through tls_sw_read_sock(), subsequent records on that connection can remain blocked behind the repeatedly requeued empty record. This manifests as the connection no longer making receive-side progress.
