UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72347: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: xtconnmark: reject invalid shift parameters Revision 2 of the CONNMARK target accepts user-controlled shift parameters and applies them to 32-bit mark values in connmarktgshift(). A shiftbits value of 32 or more triggers an undefined-shift bug when the rule is evaluated. Invalid shiftdir values are also accepted and silently fall back to the left-shift path. Reject invalid revision-2 shift parameters in connmarktgcheck() so malformed rules fail at installation time, before they can reach the packet path.

Ensure revision-2 CONNMARK rules reject shift_bits values of 32 or more and invalid shift_dir values in connmark_tg_check() at rule installation time, before packet processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-realtime.
What access would an attacker need to trigger the issue?
The severity vector indicates local access and low privileges are required. Exploitation requires installing a revision-2 CONNMARK rule with attacker-controlled invalid shift parameters that is later evaluated in the packet path.
How can I assess whether a system may already be exposed?
Review installed revision-2 CONNMARK rules for shift_bits values of 32 or greater and invalid shift_dir values. Such malformed parameters were accepted before the fix and could reach packet processing.
