UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72349: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: xtrateest: fix u64 truncation in xtrateestmt() On links faster than ~34 Gbps, where byte rate may exceed 2^32-1 (~ 4.3 GBps), the comparison result becomes incorrect because the truncated value no longer reflects the actual estimator rate. Fix by changing the local variables to u64.

Change the local variables in xt_rateest_mt() to u64 to prevent truncation of byte rates above 2^32-1.
Linux kernel netfilter xt_rateest local variable types = u64
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to experience incorrect behavior?
Systems using the xt_rateest netfilter match on links faster than approximately 34 Gbps are most likely to be affected. At those rates, the byte-rate value can exceed 2^32-1, causing the comparison to use a truncated value.
What condition is required to trigger the issue?
The system must be using xt_rateest rate comparisons and the measured byte rate must exceed roughly 4.3 GBps. The issue is a correctness problem in the comparison result caused by 64-bit rate data being stored in local variables that truncate it.
Are standard configurations necessarily affected?
The available information only identifies the xt_rateest netfilter functionality as affected. It does not establish that systems not using xt_rateest, or systems operating below the relevant traffic rate, are affected.
What is the remediation?
Apply the Linux kernel update that changes the affected xt_rateest_mt() local variables to u64. The referenced upstream fix is commit 444853cd438201007da5359821adcc2995655ab1.
