UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72350: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: xtu32: reject invalid shift counts u32matchit() executes rule-supplied shift operands on a 32-bit value. A malformed u32 rule can provide a shift count of 32 or more, triggering an undefined shift out-of-bounds during packet evaluation. Validate XTU32LEFTSH and XTU32RIGHTSH operands in u32mtcheckentry() and reject malformed rules before they reach the packet path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can exploit this issue?
An attacker needs privileges sufficient to install or modify netfilter xt_u32 rules. Exploitation requires a malformed rule containing a left or right shift count of 32 or greater.
When is a system exposed to the vulnerable behavior?
The invalid shift is reached during packet evaluation after a malformed u32 rule has been accepted. Systems not using such malformed xt_u32 rules are not described as reaching the vulnerable packet-path operation.
What is the mitigation if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Do not install or retain xt_u32 rules with XT_U32_LEFTSH or XT_U32_RIGHTSH shift operands of 32 or greater. Restrict the ability to create or modify netfilter rules to trusted administrators.
How can administrators identify problematic rules?
Review installed xt_u32 rules for left- or right-shift operands with values of 32 or higher. These are the malformed operands the resolved kernel change rejects during rule validation.
