UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72362: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/xe/pt: Fix NULL pointer dereference in xeptzapptesentry() The page-table walk framework may pass a NULL child pointer for unpopulated entries. xeptzapptesentry() called containerof(child) before checking for NULL, then dereferenced the result, causing a crash. Move the containerof() call after a NULL guard, so the function returns early instead of proceeding with an invalid pointer. XEWARNON is kept to help root cause the issue, but we now bail instead of crashing the driver. v2: Comment that triggering XEWARNON is unexpected behavior (Matt Brost) (cherry picked from commit b9297d19d9df5d4b6c994648570c5dcd1cac68ff)

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected Ubuntu kernel package variants listed are linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop. The issue is in the Linux kernel's DRM XE page-table handling.
What condition triggers the crash?
The crash can occur when the page-table walk framework provides a NULL child pointer for an unpopulated entry. The vulnerable handler performs container_of(*child) before checking whether the child pointer is NULL, leading to an invalid dereference.
What happens after applying the fix?
The handler checks for a NULL child pointer before calling container_of() and returns early when the entry is unpopulated. An XE_WARN_ON remains to flag the unexpected condition, but the driver should no longer crash from that invalid pointer.
