UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72395: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (pmbus) Fix passing events to regulator core Sashiko reports: Commit 754bd2b4a084 ("hwmon: (pmbus/core) Protect regulator operations with mutex") introduced a worker to batch regulator events over time using atomicor(). The delayed worker then passes the combined bitmask unmodified to regulatornotifiercallchain(). The core regulator subsystem's regulatorhandlecritical() function evaluates the event parameter using a strict switch statement. If multiple distinct faults occur before the worker runs (e.g., REGULATOREVENTUNDERVOLTAGE | REGULATOREVENTOVERCURRENT), the combined bitmask fails to match any case. This leaves the reason as NULL and completely bypasses the critical hwprotectiontrigger(). Fix the problem by passing events bit by bit to the regulator event handler.

Modify the regulator event worker to pass each set event bit individually to regulator_notifier_call_chain(), rather than passing the combined atomic_or() bitmask, so distinct events such as REGULATOR_EVENT_UNDER_VOLTAGE and REGULATOR_EVENT_OVER_CURRENT are handled separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
When does the protection failure occur?
It occurs when multiple distinct regulator faults are collected before the delayed worker runs. Their combined event bitmask is not recognized by the regulator core's strict event handling.
What is the practical consequence of the failed event handling?
The regulator core leaves the fault reason unset and bypasses the critical hardware-protection trigger. This can affect handling of combined faults such as under-voltage and over-current.
What level of access is indicated for exploitation?
The supplied severity vector indicates local access, low privileges, and no user interaction are required. The data does not describe a remote attack path.
