UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72396: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: adm1275: Prevent reading uninitialized stack While adding support for the ROHM BD127X0 hot-swap controllers, sashiko reported an error in device-name comparison, which can lead to reading uninitialized stack memory. Quoting Sashiko: This is a pre-existing issue, but I noticed that just before this block in adm1275probe(), there might be an out-of-bounds stack read: ret = i2csmbusreadblockdata(client, PMBUSMFRMODEL, blockbuffer); if (ret < 0) { ... } for (mid = adm1275id; mid->name[0]; mid++) { if (!strncasecmp(mid->name, blockbuffer, strlen(mid->name))) break; } Since i2csmbusreadblockdata() reads up to 32 bytes into the uninitialized stack array blockbuffer without appending a null terminator, strncasecmp() could read past the valid bytes returned in ret. For example, if the device returns a shorter string like "adm12", checking it against "adm1275" up to the length of "adm1275" will continue reading into uninitialized stack bounds. Prevent reading uninitialized memory by zeroing the stack array.

Zero the stack array block_buffer before i2c_smbus_read_block_data() so uninitialized stack memory cannot be read during the subsequent device-name comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when the adm1275 hardware-monitoring driver probes a supported PMBus hot-swap controller. The listed package families include linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What is required to trigger the vulnerable code path?
The issue is reached during adm1275 driver probing after it reads the PMBUS_MFR_MODEL value from an I2C/PMBus device. A device returning a model string shorter than an expected controller name can cause the subsequent comparison to read beyond the returned data into uninitialized stack memory.
Is a default configuration necessarily affected?
The provided information does not establish that all default installations load or use the adm1275 driver. Exposure depends on the presence of hardware using this driver and the driver probing the relevant I2C/PMBus device.
What can be done if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
The provided information identifies the affected path as the adm1275 driver probe operation. As an interim measure, avoid loading or probing this driver for affected PMBus hardware where operationally feasible.
