UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72406: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: sungem: fix probe error cleanup geminitone() calls gemremoveone() when registernetdev() fails. gemremoveone() unregisters and frees resources owned by the netdevice, including the DMA block, MMIO mapping, PCI regions, and the netdevice itself. geminitone() then falls through to its own cleanup labels and frees the same resources again. Keep the registernetdev() error path in geminitone(): clear drvdata so PM/remove paths do not see a half-registered device, remove the NAPI instance added during probe, and let the existing cleanup labels release the resources once. The issue was found by a local static-analysis checker for probe error paths. The reported path was manually inspected before sending this fix. Compile-tested with CONFIGSUNGEM=y. Runtime testing was not performed because no sungem hardware is available.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Exposure requires a system running an affected Ubuntu kernel package with the sungem network driver enabled and hardware using that driver. The affected package list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What conditions are needed to trigger the flaw?
The failure path is reached when the sungem driver's probe process calls register_netdev() and that registration fails. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges according to the supplied vector; no user interaction is required.
How can I tell whether the affected path has occurred?
The provided information identifies the trigger as a register_netdev() failure during sungem device probing. It does not provide specific log messages, crash signatures, or detection commands.
What can be done if an update cannot be applied immediately?
The available information does not specify a workaround. Reducing exposure would require preventing use of the sungem driver or the relevant hardware, but the data does not provide validated mitigation steps.
