UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72424: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rtc: msc313: fix NULL deref in shared IRQ handler at probe msc313rtcprobe() calls devmrequestirq() with IRQFSHARED and &pdev->dev as the cookie, but platformsetdrvdata() is only called later after the clock setup. With a shared IRQ line, another device on the same line can trigger the handler in that window. The handler does devgetdrvdata() on the cookie, gets NULL, and dereferences priv->rtcbase in interrupt context. Pass priv as the cookie directly so the handler reads it from devid without the lookup, removing the dependency on probe order.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What conditions are required to trigger the crash?

The affected MSC313 RTC driver must be probing while using a shared IRQ line. Another device on that same IRQ must trigger an interrupt during the window after the IRQ handler is registered but before the driver data is set.

2

What is the impact if the issue is triggered?

The shared IRQ handler can dereference a NULL driver-data pointer in interrupt context when it attempts to access the RTC base address. This can cause a kernel NULL-pointer dereference during device initialization.

3

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.

4

Is this issue limited to a particular runtime configuration?

It requires the MSC313 RTC driver to use a shared IRQ line and depends on interrupt activity from another device sharing that line during driver probe. The provided information does not establish that systems without this shared-IRQ condition are exposed.
