UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72436: Low severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: ipset: Don't use testbit() in lockless RCU readers in hash types Sashiko pointed out that there are a few lockless RCU readers using testbit() which is a relaxed atomic operation and provides no memory barrier guarantees. Use testbitacquire() instead where the operation may run parallel with add/del/gc, i.e. is not one from the next cases - protected by region lock - in a set destroy phase - in a new/temporary set creation phase

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and the corresponding FIPS variants: ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
When can the unsafe lockless reader operation occur?
It may occur when a hash-type ipset operation runs concurrently with add, delete, or garbage-collection activity. The affected cases exclude operations protected by the region lock, operations during set destruction, and new or temporary set creation.
What is the remediation described by the fix?
The kernel fix replaces test_bit() with test_bit_acquire() for the relevant lockless RCU readers, providing the required memory-ordering guarantees during concurrent operations.
