UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72451: Critical severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfrm: Fix xfrm state cache insertion race The xfrm input state cache insertion code checks the validity of the state before acquiring the global xfrmstatelock. Thus it's possible for someone else to kill the state after it passed the validity check, and then the insertion will add the dead state to the cache. Fix this by moving the validity check inside the lock. This entire function is called on the input path, where BH must be off (e.g., the caller of this function xfrminput acquires its spinlocks without disabling BH). So there is no need to disable BH here or take the RCU read lock. Remove both and replace them with an assertion that trips if BH is accidentally enabled on some future calling path.

In the xfrm input state cache insertion code, move the state validity check inside the global xfrm_state_lock; remove the BH disable and RCU read lock, and replace them with an assertion that verifies BH is disabled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
What race condition does the fix address?
A state can be killed after its validity is checked but before the global xfrm_state_lock is acquired. The prior code could then insert that dead state into the xfrm input state cache.
Is user interaction or prior authentication required for exploitation?
No. The supplied vector indicates network reachability, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction.
