UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72479: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: accel: mma8452: handle I2C read error(s) in mma8452read() Currently, If i2csmbusreadi2cblockdata() fails but mma8452setruntimepmstate() succeeds, mma8452read() returns 0. As a result, the caller mma8452readraw() assumes the read was successful and proceeds to use a buffer containing uninitialized stack memory. Add proper checking of the I2C read return value and propagate errors to the caller.

Add proper checking of the I2C read return value in mma8452_read() and propagate I2C read errors to the caller, so mma8452_read_raw() does not use an uninitialized stack buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are in scope, including linux, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-fips, linux-gcp-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-oracle. Exposure specifically depends on use of the MMA8452 accelerometer driver.
What condition is required to trigger the flaw?
An I2C block-data read performed by mma8452_read() must fail while mma8452_set_runtime_pm_state() succeeds. The driver can then report success and allow mma8452_read_raw() to use an uninitialized stack buffer.
How is the issue corrected?
The fix checks the return value from i2c_smbus_read_i2c_block_data() and propagates read errors to the caller, preventing mma8452_read_raw() from treating a failed read as successful.
