UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72480: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Aug 15, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: adc: xilinx-ams: fix out-of-bounds channel lookup in event handling amseventtochannel() may return a pointer past the end of dev->channels when no matching scanindex is found. This can lead to invalid memory access in amshandleevent(). Add a bounds check in amseventtochannel() and return NULL when no channel is found. Also guard the caller to safely handle this case.

In the Linux kernel xilinx-ams IIO driver, add a bounds check in ams_event_to_channel() so it returns NULL when no matching scan_index/channel is found, and guard the caller ams_handle_event() to safely handle a NULL result.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are in scope?

The affected software list includes ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop. The flaw is in the Xilinx AMS ADC driver's event-handling path.

2

What access does an attacker need?

The severity vector indicates local access and low privileges are required, with no user interaction. The vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.

3

What is the remediation mechanism?

The resolution adds a bounds check so an unmatched channel lookup returns NULL, and changes the event-handling caller to handle that result safely. The provided data does not specify fixed Ubuntu package versions.
