UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72481: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: magnetometer: ak8975: fix potential kernel stack memory leak Currently in the AK8975 driver there are four instances where potential uninitialized kernel stack memory leaks can occur. If i2csmbusreadi2cblockdataoremulated() returns a value less than the size of the buffer, uninitialized bytes are retained in the buffer and later the buffer is passed on to IIO buffers, potentially leaking memory to userspace. Fix this by adding checks whether the return value of the function is equal to the size of the buffer and subsequently if the value is lesser than zero to distinguish from a returned error code.

In the Linux kernel IIO magnetometer AK8975 driver, check whether each i2c_smbus_read_i2c_block_data_or_emulated() return value equals the buffer size and then check whether it is less than zero; handle short reads and returned errors so uninitialized buffer bytes are not passed to IIO buffers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when the AK8975 magnetometer driver is in use and data is made available through IIO buffers. The listed packages include linux, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-fips, linux-gcp-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-oracle.
What condition is required for the leak to occur?
An I2C block read in the AK8975 driver must return fewer bytes than the destination buffer size without returning an error. The driver can then pass the partially uninitialized buffer to IIO buffers, exposing residual kernel stack bytes to userspace.
How can I tell whether a system may be affected?
Check whether the running Ubuntu kernel is from one of the listed package families and whether the AK8975 magnetometer driver is used. The provided data does not include affected or fixed package version numbers.
