UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74282: High severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tipc: prevent sntunacked underflow on CONNACK tipcskconnprotorcv() subtracts the peer-supplied connection ack count from the unsigned 16-bit send counter sntunacked without checking that it does not exceed the number of messages actually outstanding: tsk->sntunacked -= msgconnack(hdr); msgconnack() is read straight from a received CONNMANAGER/CONNACK message. If the ack count is larger than sntunacked, the subtraction wraps to a near-maximum value, leaving tskconncong() permanently true and starving the connection of further transmits. Validate the ACK count at the start of the CONNACK block and drop the message if it acknowledges more messages than are outstanding. A peer (or, for a local connection, the connected peer socket) can otherwise wedge a TIPC connection's send side by sending an oversized connection ack.

At the start of the CONN_ACK handling block, validate that the peer-supplied ACK count does not exceed the number of outstanding messages (snt_unacked), and drop the message if it does.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger the denial of service?
A peer that can send a TIPC CONN_MANAGER/CONN_ACK message to the affected connection can trigger it. For a local connection, the connected peer socket can do so.
What is the impact of a successful attack?
An oversized connection ACK can cause the unsigned send-unacknowledged counter to underflow and remain near its maximum value. This leaves congestion control permanently active and prevents further transmissions on the affected TIPC connection.
Does exploitation require authentication or user interaction?
The supplied severity vector indicates network reachability, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction. The attack depends on the ability to act as a peer for a TIPC connection and send the malformed ACK.
How is the issue addressed?
The resolved kernel change validates the ACK count at the start of CONN_ACK processing and drops messages that acknowledge more messages than are outstanding.
