UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74312: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vhost/vdpa: validate virtqueue index in mmap and fault paths vhostvdpammap() and vhostvdpafault() use vma->vmpgoff as a virtqueue index for getvqnotification(), but they do not validate that the index is smaller than v->nvqs. The ioctl path already performs both a bounds check and arrayindexnospec(), but the mmap/fault path only checks that the index fits in u16. This allows an out-of-range queue index to reach driver-specific getvqnotification() callbacks. Fix this by extracting a unified vhostvdpagetvqnotification() helper that validates the queue index against v->nvqs and applies arrayindexnospec() before calling the driver callback. Both the mmap and fault paths use this helper, and the bounds checking is consolidated into a single location. From source inspection, the most defensible impact is out-of-bounds access in the callback path, potentially leading to invalid PFN remaps and crash/DoS.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are in scope where the vhost/vDPA functionality is used. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges; the provided data does not establish exposure for systems that do not use this functionality.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs local access and low privileges, with no user interaction required. They must be able to reach the vhost/vDPA mmap or fault path with a crafted virtual-queue index that is outside the device's configured queue count.
What is the likely impact?
An out-of-range virtual-queue index can reach driver-specific notification callbacks. The stated defensible impact is out-of-bounds access that may cause invalid PFN remaps and a kernel crash or denial of service; the severity vector also rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability as high.
How can this be mitigated if a patched kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
Restrict local access by untrusted users and avoid exposing or using the affected vhost/vDPA mmap functionality where possible. The vulnerability is reached through the mmap and fault paths, so limiting access to those paths reduces the opportunity for exploitation.
