UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74320: Buffer Overflow
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: sm501fb: Fix buffer errors in OF binding code The code that gets the frame buffer mode from OF has 'use after free', 'buffer overrun' and memory leaks. info->ediddata isn't free if the probe functions fail or if pd->defmode is set. If both the CRT and PANEL are enabled info->ediddata is used after being freed and is freed twice. The string returned by ofgetproperty(np, "mode", &len) is just written over either the static "640x480-16@60" or the module parameter string without any regard for the length (which is most likely longer). Use kstrump() for the OF mode and free everything before freeing 'info.

In the fbdev sm501fb OF binding code, use kstrump() for the OF mode string, free all allocated objects before freeing info, and ensure info->edid_data is freed when probe functions fail or when pd->def_mode is set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely exposed to this issue?
Affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-aws-fips, and linux-azure-fips. Exposure specifically depends on use of the sm501fb framebuffer driver and its Open Firmware mode binding code.
What configuration is required to trigger the vulnerable code paths?
The issue involves obtaining a framebuffer mode from the Open Firmware "mode" property. A use-after-free and double-free condition can occur when both CRT and PANEL are enabled; probe failures and a configured pd->def_mode also affect cleanup of edID data.
What kind of attacker-controlled input is involved?
The vulnerable code writes the string returned by the Open Firmware "mode" property into fixed or module-parameter-backed storage without respecting its length. An overly long mode value can cause a buffer overrun.
