UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74341: Buffer Overflow
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: wcn36xx: fix heap overflow from oversized firmware HAL response The firmware response dispatcher copies all synchronous HAL responses into the 4096-byte halbuf without validating the response length. A response exceeding WCN36XXHALBUFSIZE causes a heap buffer overflow with firmware-controlled content. Add a bounds check on the response length.

Add a bounds check in the wcn36xx firmware response dispatcher before copying synchronous HAL responses into hal_buf, rejecting responses whose length exceeds WCN36XX_HAL_BUF_SIZE (4096 bytes).

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Exposure requires use of the Linux kernel wcn36xx Wi-Fi driver and communication with its firmware. The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What does exploitation require?
An attacker needs a way to cause the wcn36xx firmware to return an oversized synchronous HAL response. The vulnerable dispatcher copies that firmware-controlled response into a fixed 4096-byte buffer without validating its length, causing a heap overflow.
What is the impact if exploitation succeeds?
The overflow can overwrite heap memory using firmware-controlled content. The provided severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
