UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74362: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext2: fix ignored return value of genericwritesync() Fix ext2diowriteiter() to propagate the error returned by genericwritesync() instead of silently discarding it, which could cause write(2) to return success to userspace on OSYNC/ODSYNC files even when the sync failed. The correct pattern, already used in ext2daxwriteiter() in the same file and in ext4, xfs, f2fs among others, is: if (ret > 0) ret = genericwritesync(iocb, ret); Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE. [JK: Reflect also filemapwriteandwait() return value]

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop. The issue concerns ext2 filesystem writes.
What conditions are needed to trigger the incorrect success result?
A write must use the ext2 direct-I/O write path on a file opened with O_SYNC or O_DSYNC, and the subsequent synchronization operation must fail. In that case, write(2) could report success despite the failed sync.
What is the practical impact?
Applications relying on O_SYNC or O_DSYNC write completion semantics may be told that data was durably synchronized when it was not. This can lead to applications failing to detect storage synchronization errors.
