UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74401: Critical severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dlm: fix add msg handle in sendqueue ordered In a benchmark scenario triggering a lot of requests that triggers a lot of DLM messages on the network it can be that the mh->seq is not ordered according the oldest seq number. This ordering is required by dlmreceiveack as "before(mh->seq, seq)" will stop to check for older sequence numbers that are ordered in the tail of "node->sendqueue". The side effects of not having it correct ordered regarding "before(mh->seq, seq)" are refcounting issues and use-after free. I only was able to reproduce this issue in a experimental DLM branch and a user space DLM benchmark that uses iouring. After changing this I don't experienced any refcounting with the sending buffer issues anymore.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely exposed to this issue?
Systems using the Distributed Lock Manager (DLM) and generating high volumes of DLM network messages are the relevant exposure group. The issue was reproduced in an experimental DLM branch with a userspace DLM benchmark using io_uring.
What conditions trigger the flaw?
The condition involves enough request activity to create many DLM messages, causing message sequence numbers in a node's send queue to be out of oldest-sequence order. This can prevent acknowledgement processing from finding older sequence numbers later in the queue.
What is the likely impact if the condition occurs?
Incorrect send-queue ordering can cause reference-counting problems and use-after-free conditions involving sending buffers. The vulnerability is rated critical with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction in the provided severity data.
Is there a workaround indicated when patching cannot happen immediately?
No workaround is provided. Reducing or avoiding workloads that generate large volumes of DLM network messages may reduce exposure to the described trigger, but this is not stated as a verified mitigation.
