UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74411: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: rtw89: Correct data type for scan index to avoid infinite loop A kernel soft lockup was observed during Wi-Fi scanning on the 6GHz band. The CPU becomes stuck in rtw89hwscanaddchanax for over 20 seconds, leading to a system panic. RIP points to 0f b6 c3 (movzbl %bl, %eax), which zero-extends the low 8 bits of RBX into RAX. RBX (the counter i) has reached a huge value: 0x137466a1. watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 26s! Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to experience this issue?
Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel package and the rtw89 Wi-Fi driver are exposed when performing Wi-Fi scans on the 6 GHz band. The reported outcome is a kernel soft lockup that can lead to a system panic.
Does exploitation require an authenticated local user or user interaction?
The provided severity vector indicates adjacent-network attack scope, with low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction required. The description specifically associates triggering with Wi-Fi scanning on 6 GHz.
How can I recognize that a system may be affected?
Affected systems may log a watchdog soft-lockup message showing a CPU stuck for more than 20 seconds in rtw89_hw_scan_add_chan_ax, often in the cfg80211_wiphy_work workqueue. The system may subsequently panic during 6 GHz Wi-Fi scanning.
