UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74438: Buffer Overflow
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: sun4i-ss - Remove insecure and unused rngalg Remove sun4issrng, as it is insecure and unused: - It has multiple vulnerabilities. sun4issprngseed() is missing locking and has a buffer overflow. sun4issprnggenerate() fails to fill the entire buffer with cryptographic random bytes, because it rounds the destination length down and also doesn't actually wait for the hardware to be ready before pulling bytes from it. - No user of this code is known. It's usable only theoretically via the "rng" algorithm type of AFALG. But userspace actually just uses the actual Linux RNG (/dev/random etc) instead. And rngalgs don't contribute entropy to the actual Linux RNG either. (This may have been confused with hwrng, which does contribute entropy.) The sun4issprngseed() buffer overflow was reported by Tianchu Chen and discovered by Atuin - Automated Vulnerability Discovery Engine There's no point in fixing all these vulnerabilities individually when this is unused code, so let's just remove it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Exposure is limited to systems using the sun4i-ss RNG algorithm through the AF_ALG "rng" interface. The code is described as unused, with no known users; normal userspace random sources such as /dev/random do not use it.
Does this affect the Linux system random-number generator or its entropy pool?
No. The affected rng_alg implementation does not contribute entropy to the Linux RNG, and the description distinguishes it from hwrng implementations that can contribute entropy.
What would an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker would need local access and the ability to use the theoretically available AF_ALG "rng" algorithm interface for sun4i-ss. The reported flaws include a missing lock and a buffer overflow in seeding, as well as incomplete and improperly synchronized random-byte generation.
What should be done if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Avoid using or exposing the sun4i-ss RNG algorithm through AF_ALG. Continue using the normal Linux random interfaces, such as /dev/random, which are not described as using the affected implementation.
