UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74457: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: peakusb: add bounds check for USB channel index The channel control index ctrlidx is derived from rx->len which comes directly from a device USB payload. The mask 0x0f allows values 0-15, but the array size of usbif->dev[] is only 2. Values 2-15 cause heap out-of-bounds read, eventually causing kernel panic in the IRQ context. Add bounds checking for ctrlidx before the array access in both pcanusbprohandlecanmsg() and pcanusbprohandleerror().

Add bounds checking for ctrl_idx before array access in both pcan_usb_pro_handle_canmsg() and pcan_usb_pro_handle_error(); reject values outside the valid usb_if->dev[] index range of 0-1.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when the peak_usb CAN driver processes USB payloads from a device. The affected package list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What is required to trigger the failure?
The driver must receive a USB payload whose length produces a channel control index from 2 through 15. Those values bypass the existing mask but exceed the two-entry device array, causing an out-of-bounds heap read that can lead to a kernel panic in IRQ context.
