UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74458: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: kvaserusbleaf: kvaserusbleafwaitcmd(): validate received command extents The wait and bulk receive paths walk variable-length commands from a USB buffer. A nonzero command shorter than CMDHEADERLEN can still be dispatched, and the wait path copies a matching command into a fixed caller-owned struct kvasercmd using the device-provided length. Reject nonzero commands that do not contain the fixed header or that extend beyond the current USB buffer item. In the wait path, also reject a matching command that exceeds the destination before copying it.

In the Linux kernel can: kvaser_usb_leaf wait and bulk receive paths, validate variable-length USB command extents: reject nonzero commands shorter than CMD_HEADER_LEN, reject commands extending beyond the current USB buffer item, and in the wait path reject matching commands that exceed the destination kvaser_cmd before copying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Exposure requires an Ubuntu system running one of the listed Linux kernel packages and using the Kvaser USB Leaf CAN driver with a connected device that can supply malformed USB command data.
What does an attacker need to exploit this vulnerability?
An attacker would need to cause the driver to process a nonzero variable-length command that is shorter than the required header, extends beyond the current USB buffer item, or exceeds the fixed destination structure used by the wait path.
Are systems affected by default?
The provided information does not establish that default installations are affected. The vulnerable paths are specific to the kvaser_usb_leaf CAN driver and USB command handling.
What can be done if an updated kernel cannot be installed immediately?
Limit exposure to untrusted or unknown Kvaser USB Leaf CAN devices and avoid connecting devices that could provide malformed USB command data until the kernel update can be applied.
