UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74461: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i2c: imx: Cancel hrtimer before clearing slave pointer In i2cimxunregslave(), the slave pointer is set to NULL after disabling interrupts. However, a pending interrupt might already have started the hrtimer (i2cimxslavetimeout) before the pointer was cleared. If the hrtimer fires after i2cimx->slave is set to NULL, the timer callback i2cimxslavefinishop() will call i2cimxslaveevent() with a NULL slave pointer, which results in a use-after-free / NULL pointer dereference. Fix by canceling the hrtimer and waiting for it to complete after disabling interrupts, before clearing the slave pointer.

In i2c_imx_unreg_slave(), disable interrupts, cancel the hrtimer and wait for it to complete, then clear the slave pointer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most exposed to this issue?
The issue applies to the listed Ubuntu kernel packages when the i.MX I2C driver is used in slave mode. Exploitation is rated local, so an attacker needs local access to the affected system; no privileges or user interaction are indicated.
What race condition is needed to trigger the failure?
A pending interrupt must start the slave timeout hrtimer before slave unregistration clears the slave pointer. The timer must then fire after the pointer has been cleared, causing the callback to use a NULL or freed slave pointer.
What does the fix change?
The fix cancels the hrtimer and waits for any running timer callback to complete after interrupts are disabled and before the slave pointer is cleared. Administrators should deploy an Ubuntu kernel update that includes this change when available for their kernel package.
