UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74462: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Aug 15, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i2c: imx: mark I2C adapter when hardware is powered down On some i.MX platforms, certain I2C client drivers keep a periodic workqueue which continues to trigger I2C transfers. During system suspend/resume, there exists a time window between: - suspendnoirq and the system entering suspend - the system starting to resume and resumenoirq In this window, the I2C controller resources such as clock and pinctrl may already be disabled or not yet restored. If a workqueue triggers an I2C transfer in this period, the driver attempts to access I2C registers while the hardware resources are unavailable, which may lead to system hang. Mark the I2C adapter as suspended during noirq suspend and block new transfers until resume, ensuring that I2C transfers are only issued when hardware resources are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel package on certain i.MX platforms are exposed, particularly where I2C client drivers continue issuing periodic transfers from a workqueue during suspend or resume. The listed Ubuntu kernel packages include linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-hwe-edge, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, and linux-aws-5.0.

2

What conditions are needed to trigger the problem?

An I2C client driver's periodic workqueue must initiate an I2C transfer during the suspend/resume window after controller resources have been disabled or before they have been restored. This can cause register access while the I2C controller clock or pinctrl resources are unavailable.

3

What is the likely impact if the issue is triggered?

The system may hang. The described failure occurs when the I2C driver accesses controller registers while its hardware resources are powered down or not yet restored.

4

How can the issue be mitigated before an update is applied?

The provided information does not identify a configuration workaround. Reducing or preventing I2C transfers from periodic client-driver workqueues during system suspend and resume would address the triggering condition, where operationally feasible.
