UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74471: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Check return value of registerevent() in tracemoduleaddevents() tracemoduleaddevents() ignores the return value of registerevent() and unconditionally calls addeventtotracers() for each event. If registerevent() fails (for example, if eventinit() fails), the traceeventcall is not added to ftraceevents list, but addeventtotracers() still creates a traceeventfile pointing to it. If module loading subsequently fails and module memory is freed, tracing state retains a stale traceeventcall pointer in traceeventfile, leading to a use-after-free when tracefs or tracing subsystem operations are later executed. Fix this by checking the return value of registerevent() and only calling addeventtotracers() if event registration succeeded.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
A trace event registration must fail while a kernel module is being loaded, and the module load must subsequently fail so that its memory is freed. Later tracefs or tracing subsystem operations can then dereference the stale trace_event_call pointer.
What access does an attacker need?
The supplied vector indicates local access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. The issue affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability at high impact according to the provided severity data.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
How can I tell whether a system has encountered the vulnerable state?
The described condition leaves tracing state with a stale trace_event_call pointer after failed event registration and a subsequent failed module load. Operations involving tracefs or the tracing subsystem may then trigger the resulting use-after-free.
