UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74497: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Clamp frame size in implicit-feedback mode sndusbhandlesyncurb() scales received sync packet sizes by the sender's stride and stores the result directly in outpacket->packetsize[i]. If a connected USB device sends an oversized sync packet, this frame count can exceed ep->maxframesize. The un-clamped frame count then propagates to the playback endpoint queue, potentially driving packet transfers beyond the endpoint's hardware frame limits. Cap the calculated frame count against ep->maxframesize in sndusbhandlesyncurb() to prevent oversized packets from entering the playback queue.

In snd_usb_handle_sync_urb() in the Linux kernel ALSA USB-audio code, cap the calculated frame count at ep->maxframesize before storing it in out_packet->packet_size[i], preventing oversized packets from entering the playback queue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which deployments are exposed?
Systems running the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when ALSA USB audio uses implicit-feedback mode with a connected USB device. The affected package set includes standard, AWS, Azure, GCP, and FIPS Ubuntu kernels.
What does exploitation require?
An attacker needs a connected USB device capable of sending an oversized synchronization packet while the affected USB audio path is in use. The malformed packet can cause a calculated frame count to exceed the endpoint's hardware frame limit.
