UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74512: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: audit: fix potential use-after-free in auditdelrule() auditdelrule() destroys e->rule.exe via auditremovemarkrule() before unlinking the rule from RCU-visible filter lists and waiting for a grace period. Concurrent readers in auditfilter() and auditfilterrules() still dereference e->rule.exe, while the fsnotify mark can be freed on an independent lifetime path. This creates a use-after-free window during rule deletion. Fix this by unlinking the rule from the RCU-visible lists and invoking synchronizercu() before calling auditremovemarkrule() (and other rule removal helpers). This ensures that all existing RCU readers have exited the critical section before any underlying resources are destroyed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What access does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The vulnerability has a local attack vector and requires low privileges. No user interaction is required.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
When is the vulnerable condition triggered?
The use-after-free window occurs while an audit rule is being deleted and concurrent audit filter readers still dereference the rule's executable-related resource. The vulnerable ordering destroys underlying resources before the rule is removed from RCU-visible filter lists and existing readers have completed.
What does the fix change?
The fix removes the rule from RCU-visible lists and waits for an RCU grace period with synchronize_rcu() before removing the associated mark and other rule resources. This prevents concurrent readers from accessing resources after they are destroyed.
