UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74547: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (adt7470) Fix busy-loop and I2C flooding in update thread When userspace configures 'autoupdateinterval' to 0 via sysfs, the background kthread executes scheduletimeoutinterruptible(0), which returns immediately. If 'numtempsensors' is concurrently or previously set to 0, the msleepinterruptible() delay inside adt7470readtemperatures() also becomes 0. This combination forces the background thread into a tight, unbounded busy-loop, hogging the CPU and flooding the I2C bus with a continuous stream of transactions. Fix this vulnerability by raising the lower limit of the clampval in autoupdateintervalstore() from 0 to 500 milliseconds. This guarantees a reasonable minimum sleep window between sensor updates, protecting the system from intentional or accidental I2C bus denial of service.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the busy loop?
Userspace must set the adt7470 driver's auto_update_interval sysfs value to 0. The unbounded loop occurs when num_temp_sensors is also 0, causing both the update-thread timeout and temperature-read delay to return immediately.
What is the practical impact of exploitation?
The background kernel thread can consume CPU in a tight loop while continuously issuing I2C transactions. This can cause an intentional or accidental denial of service on the I2C bus.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What configuration change addresses the issue?
The fix raises the minimum accepted auto_update_interval from 0 to 500 milliseconds. This ensures a minimum delay between sensor updates and prevents the zero-timeout update loop.
