UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74664: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: openvswitch: reallocate update replies for mismatched IDs ovsflowcmdnew() preallocates the optional reply skb before it takes ovsmutex and before it knows which existing flow will be updated. That is normally fine because the skb is sized from the request flow identifier. That identifier also becomes the inserted flow's identifier. For updates, however, a request with a UFID may miss the UFID lookup and then fall back to the flow key lookup. That lookup can legitimately find an existing key-identified flow. UFIDs are optional and the flow key is the primary identifier. For echoed replies, ovsflowcmdfillinfo() writes the matched flow's identifier, not the request identifier used for the preallocation. A short request UFID can therefore leave too little room for the key identifier. The fill can then fail with -EMSGSIZE and hit the BUGON(error < 0) in the update path. Once the update target has been resolved, reallocate the reply skb if the matched flow needs a larger reply than the request identifier allowed. Do this before replacing the actions so the request can still fail cleanly if the rare extra allocation fails.

In ovs_flow_cmd_new(), after resolving the update target, reallocate the reply skb when the matched flow's identifier requires more space than the request UFID allowed; perform this before replacing the existing flow so allocation failure can return cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the failure?
An attacker or other actor must be able to submit an Open vSwitch flow update with a UFID that misses UFID lookup but falls back to an existing flow found by its flow key. The supplied UFID must be shorter than the identifier of the matched flow, causing the preallocated echoed-reply buffer to be too small.
What is the practical impact if the vulnerable path is reached?
The reply fill can fail with -EMSGSIZE, and the update path reaches a BUG_ON for that error. This can cause a kernel failure rather than a cleanly rejected flow update.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
How can administrators identify exposure from flow activity?
Look for Open vSwitch flow updates that provide a UFID but resolve an existing flow through flow-key fallback rather than UFID lookup. Cases where the request UFID is shorter than the matched flow identifier are the relevant condition.
