UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80548: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/vfioccw: Selectively expand iomutex The iomutex was defined to serialize the ioregions, but then has also sort of been associated with the I/O themselves because of the close relationship they share. With the handful of races that are possible, the choices are either to: A) expand the scope of iomutex to close these remaining windows, or B) reduce the scope of iomutex to just ioregion, and introduce a new lock mechanism for the remaining I/O resources This patch implements A, since B brings with it a lot more interactions that would need to be tracked and kept in a correct hierarchy. It also takes advantage of the workqueue element for cpfree() that now gets called out of fsmnotoper(), which could be invoked out of an interrupt context and thus cannot acquire a mutex itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely exposed to this issue?
The affected software list consists of Ubuntu kernel packages, including linux, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-aws-fips, linux-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp-fips, and linux-realtime. The vulnerable code is in the s390 vfio_ccw area, so exposure depends on use of that architecture-specific virtualization I/O functionality.
What level of access does an attacker need?
The supplied severity vector indicates local attack access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. It also indicates scope change and high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
What is the underlying issue addressed by the fix?
The fix expands the scope of io_mutex to close remaining race windows involving I/O resources and io_regions in s390/vfio_ccw. It also relies on cp_free() being invoked through a workqueue because fsm_notoper() may run in interrupt context and cannot acquire a mutex.
