UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80593: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (asusatk0110) Check package count before accessing element atkecpresent() walks the management group package returned by the GGRP ACPI method and, for each sub-package, reads its first element: id = &obj->package.elements[0]; if (id->type != ACPITYPEINTEGER) without checking that the sub-package is non-empty. ACPICA allocates the element array with exactly package.count entries, so for a sub-package with a zero count this reads past the allocation. The sibling function atkdebugfsggrpopen() performs the same access but skips empty packages with a package.count check first. Add the same check to atkecpresent() so a malformed firmware package cannot trigger an out-of-bounds read.

Update atk_ec_present() to check that each sub-package has a nonzero package.count before accessing package.elements[0], skipping empty packages to prevent an out-of-bounds read.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially exposed when the asus_atk0110 hardware-monitoring driver processes a malformed management-group package returned by firmware through the GGRP ACPI method.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
The issue is locally exploitable without privileges or user interaction according to the provided vector. Exploitation requires a malformed firmware ACPI package containing an empty sub-package that is processed by atk_ec_present().
What happens when the vulnerable code is reached?
The driver accesses the first element of an empty ACPI sub-package, causing an out-of-bounds read past the element allocation. The reported impact includes high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
What should be done if patching cannot happen immediately?
The provided data identifies the affected path as the asus_atk0110 hardware-monitoring driver handling firmware GGRP ACPI data. No specific mitigation or workaround is provided.
