UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80598: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs3: fix out-of-bounds read in decompresslznt decompresslznt() does not validate array index bounds before accessing the decompression table. A corrupted NTFS3 image with invalid compressed data can trigger an out-of-bounds read. Add index bounds checking to prevent the OOB access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed if they process a corrupted NTFS3 filesystem image containing invalid compressed data. The attack vector is local and requires low privileges.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs the ability to cause the system to process a specially crafted or corrupted NTFS3 image with invalid compressed data. No user interaction is required.
What is the potential impact?
Successful exploitation can cause an out-of-bounds read in the NTFS3 LZNT decompression path. The provided severity vector indicates high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
What mitigation is available if an updated kernel cannot be installed immediately?
The available data identifies malformed NTFS3 images with invalid compressed data as the trigger. Avoid processing untrusted or corrupted NTFS3 images until the kernel fix is deployed.
