UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80663: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Harden daemon pidfile open Avoid symlink-based pidfile clobbering by opening the pidfile with ONOFOLLOW and validating it with fstat() before locking/writing. The daemon currently uses a fixed pidfile path under /tmp. A local unprivileged user can pre-create a symlink at that path and cause a root-run daemon instance to write into an attacker-chosen file.

Harden the daemon pidfile open: open the fixed /tmp pidfile with O_NOFOLLOW, then validate it with fstat() before locking and writing to prevent symlink-based pidfile clobbering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems that run the Intel Speed Select daemon as root are exposed if a local unprivileged user can create a symlink at the daemon's fixed pidfile path under /tmp. The listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are affected by this advisory.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs local unprivileged access and must be able to pre-create a symlink at the fixed /tmp pidfile location before the root-run daemon opens it. User interaction is also required according to the supplied severity vector.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
The root-run daemon can be induced to write to an attacker-chosen file through the symlink. The supplied vector indicates high availability impact and low integrity impact, with no confidentiality impact.
What can be done if patching cannot happen immediately?
Prevent unprivileged users from creating or controlling a symlink at the daemon's fixed pidfile path under /tmp, and avoid running the daemon as root where operationally possible. The resolved implementation uses O_NOFOLLOW and fstat() validation before locking or writing the pidfile.
