UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80664: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: xtnat: reject unsupported target families xtnat SNAT and DNAT target handlers assume IP-family conntrack state is present and can dereference a NULL pointer when instantiated from an unsupported family through nftcompat. A bridge-family compat rule can therefore trigger a NULL-dereference in nfnatsetupinfo(). Reject non-IP families in xtnatcheckentry() so unsupported targets cannot be installed. Keep NFPROTOINET allowed for valid inet NAT compat users and leave the runtime fast path unchanged. [ The crash was fixed via 9dbba7e694ec ("netfilter: nftcompat: ebtables emulation must reject non-bridge targets"), so this patch is no longer critical. Nevertheless, NAT is only relevant for ipv4/ipv6, so this extra family check is a good idea in any case. ]

Reject non-IP families in xt_nat_checkentry() so unsupported xt_nat targets cannot be installed, while keeping NFPROTO_INET allowed for valid inet NAT compatibility users.

Frequently Asked Questions
What access does an attacker need to trigger the crash?
The attacker needs local access with low privileges and must be able to install or instantiate a crafted nft_compat rule using an unsupported protocol family. The issue can cause a NULL-pointer dereference in nf_nat_setup_info().
Which rule configuration is involved?
A bridge-family compatibility rule that uses an xt_nat SNAT or DNAT target can trigger the issue because those targets assume IP-family conntrack state. NAT targets are relevant to IPv4 and IPv6; NFPROTO_INET remains valid for inet NAT compatibility users.
Is there any existing mitigation mentioned for this issue?
Yes. The description states that a prior fix for nft_compat ebtables emulation rejecting non-bridge targets already fixed the crash path, making this additional family validation no longer critical. The newer check prevents unsupported target families from being installed.
