UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80679: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/dasd: Fix potential NULL pointer dereference dasdreleasespace() checks the implementation of the isese() discipline function before calling it to determine if a given device is an ESE DASD. The current usage of the logical AND operator will lead to a NULL pointer dereference as the function is called even if the function pointer is NULL. Fix this by using the logical OR operator.

In the Linux kernel s390 DASD code, update dasd_release_space() to use the logical OR operator when checking the is_ese() discipline function, preventing the function from being called when its function pointer is NULL.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
The affected software list consists of Ubuntu Linux kernel packages, including standard, AWS, Azure, GCP, FIPS, and realtime variants. The vulnerable code is in the s390 DASD subsystem, so exposure is relevant to systems using that architecture and DASD devices.
What condition triggers the NULL pointer dereference?
The issue occurs when dasd_release_space() evaluates a DASD discipline whose is_ese() function pointer is NULL. Due to the incorrect logical AND condition, the kernel attempts to call that NULL function pointer.
What is the mitigation if an update cannot be applied immediately?
No workaround or configuration-based mitigation is provided. Reducing exposure would require avoiding the affected s390 DASD code path where a discipline may lack an is_ese() implementation.
