UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80688: Low severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: riscv: drop init from veccheckunalignedaccessspeedallcpus This function runs within a kthread and need not necessarily finish before system finishes boot and freeinitmem() unmaps the .init.text section. This function makes calls to SBI for probing unaligned access speed, and if this is slow for some reason (say some debug prints were added to SBI), the kthread can still be running at this point and result in an instruction page fault when trying to fetch from the freed region. Drop __init from the vec_check_unaligned_access_speed_all_cpus function signature so the kthread cannot execute from the freed .init.text section.
Linux kernel __init annotation on vec_check_unaligned_access_speed_all_cpus = removed

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
The issue applies to RISC-V Linux kernel environments using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages, including linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-hwe-edge, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, and linux-aws-5.0. The failure occurs during boot when the unaligned-access speed check runs in a kernel thread.
How can I tell whether a system has encountered the problem?
Look for a boot-time kernel paging-request fault or Oops involving the vec_check_unali kernel thread. The reported instruction pointer may reference vec_check_unaligned_access_speed_all_cpus, with an instruction page fault caused by execution from freed .init.text memory.
