UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80717: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sctp: validate Adaptation Indication parameter length The Adaptation Layer Indication parameter contains a fixed 32-bit Adaptation Code Point after its parameter header. However, sctpverifyparam() accepts a header-only parameter because the generic parameter walker only requires the header to be present. sctpprocessparam() then reads adaptationind beyond the declared parameter. When the malformed parameter is last in an INIT, the read starts at the receive skb tail, and the value is copied into the state cookie returned in the INIT ACK. This may disclose four receive-buffer tail bytes. Require the declared parameter length to match the fixed structure size and abort the association through the existing invalid parameter length path otherwise.

Validate that the SCTP Adaptation Indication parameter's declared length matches the fixed structure size, and abort the association through the existing invalid-parameter-length path when it does not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Ubuntu systems using the listed Linux kernel packages are affected: linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips. Exposure requires SCTP processing of an INIT containing an Adaptation Layer Indication parameter.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the information disclosure?
An unauthenticated attacker needs network access to send a malformed SCTP INIT with an Adaptation Layer Indication parameter whose declared length includes only the parameter header. If that malformed parameter is last in the INIT, the kernel can copy four bytes from the receive-buffer tail into the state cookie returned in the INIT ACK.
How can I determine whether an attempted exploitation is relevant?
Look for SCTP association initiation traffic containing an Adaptation Layer Indication parameter with an invalid, header-only declared length. The vulnerable behavior occurs while processing SCTP INIT messages and returns the disclosed value in the corresponding INIT ACK state cookie.
