UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80735: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 3, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ovpn: ensure socket is owned by ovpn before deref skuserdata Some subsystems, like BPF SOCKMAP, set skuserdata without actually setting the encaptype. For this reason, we must make sure that the type is the one ovpn expects before dereferencing skuserdata. Failing to do so may lead to out-of-bounds reads.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What level of access does an attacker need?

The reported vector is local and requires low privileges. No user interaction is required.

2

What configurations are most relevant to exposure?

The issue is relevant where sk_user_data can be set without setting the expected encapsulation type, as can occur with BPF SOCKMAP. The vulnerable ovpn path must then dereference that socket user data.

3

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed software includes ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.
