UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80740: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 3, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/log: Fix infinite loop when scale is too large for display When scale is large enough that scaledfont exceeds the display dimensions, rows or columns become 0. A columns value of 0 causes an infinite loop in drmlogdrawkmsgrecord() because the loop never decrements len. Check for zero rows/columns in drmlogsetupmodeset() and return an error, cleaning up the already allocated buffer to avoid a leak.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What condition is required to trigger the infinite loop?

The display scale must be large enough that the scaled font exceeds the display dimensions, causing the calculated row or column count to become zero. The infinite loop occurs when the column count is zero in drm_log_draw_kmsg_record().

2

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.

3

What does the fix change?

The fix checks for zero rows or columns in drm_log_setup_modeset() and returns an error instead of proceeding. It also cleans up an already allocated buffer to prevent a memory leak.
