UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80779: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/ionic: avoid OOB TX partner lookup for hwstamp RXQ The dedicated hardware timestamp RX queue is allocated with q->index equal to lif->ionic->nrxqsperlif. The normal txqcqs array only contains the regular queue pairs, so using that index to set rxq->partner can read one entry past txqcqs[] and then write through the derived pointer. Only link RX/TX partners for normal queue-pair indexes. Leave the hwstamp RX queue unpaired, and make the XDPTX path abort cleanly if an RX queue has no TX partner.

In net/ionic, leave the dedicated hardware-timestamp RX queue unpaired, link RX/TX partners only for normal queue-pair indexes, and make the XDP_TX path abort cleanly when an RX queue has no TX partner.

Frequently Asked Questions
What configuration is implicated by this issue?
The issue involves the dedicated hardware timestamp RX queue in the ionic network driver. That queue is assigned an index equal to the number of RX queues per LIF, while the normal TX completion-queue array contains only regular queue pairs.
What happens when the vulnerable queue is paired with a TX queue?
Using the hardware-timestamp RX queue index to locate a TX partner can read one entry beyond the txqcqs array and then write through the resulting derived pointer. The fix leaves the hardware-timestamp RX queue unpaired and makes XDP_TX abort cleanly when an RX queue has no TX partner.
