UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80812: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: dummy: Check card index validity at probe snddummyprobe() blindly trusts that the given devptr->id value is within the proper card index range. It's OK for the devices the driver itself creates at the module probe time, but if the device is bound manually via sysfs interface, this could be -1 as "none", and this leads to OOB access for index[] and other parameters. Add a sanity check for the card index and warn/correct it if it's a value out of the range.

In the ALSA dummy driver probe function snd_dummy_probe(), validate devptr->id before using it as an index; warn and correct values outside the valid card index range, including -1 ("none"), to prevent out-of-bounds access to index[] and other parameters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What condition is needed to trigger the out-of-bounds access?
The ALSA dummy device must be bound manually through the sysfs interface with an invalid card index, such as -1, which represents "none." Devices created by the dummy driver itself during module probe are described as having valid indices.
Are dummy devices created automatically when the module loads affected by this issue?
The description states that the driver-created devices at module probe time use proper card index values. The unsafe path is manual binding through sysfs, where the supplied device ID can be outside the valid card-index range.
