UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80848: Race Condition
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfrm: espintcp: fix UAF during close ZDI reported and analyzed a race condition during close for espintcp sockets: espintcpclose() frees emsg->skb via kfreeskb() without holding any socket lock. Concurrently, the xfrmtransreinject work queue invokes espoutputtcpfinish() -> espintcppushskb() -> espintcppushmsgs() -> skbsendsocklocked(), which reads the same skb as a data source. Fix this by adding a synchronizercu() call after resetting skprot, since espoutputtcpfinish() runs under RCU and won't use a socket with skprot == &tcpprot. Simply taking the socket lock in espintcpclose() could lead to leaks, if espoutputtcpfinish() re-adds an skb in the slot we just freed. After this, the existing barrier() is no longer needed.

In the espintcp close-path fix, add a synchronize_rcu() call after resetting sk_prot; the existing barrier() is no longer needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are in scope for this issue?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-riscv, and linux-gkeop kernel packages. The issue concerns espintcp sockets.
What conditions are needed to trigger the vulnerability?
A race must occur while an espintcp socket is closing. The close path can free an skb while the xfrm_trans_reinject work queue concurrently processes that same skb through esp_output_tcp_finish() and related espintcp functions.
What does the fix change?
The fix adds synchronize_rcu() after resetting sk_prot so RCU-running output work will not continue using a socket whose protocol has been reset to tcp_prot. This prevents the work queue from reading an skb after the close path frees it.
