UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80888: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/vmwgfx: drop dmabuf reference on foreign-fd prime import ttmprimefdtohandle() returns -ENOSYS when the imported fd's dmabuf->ops do not match the ttmobjectdevice's ops, but does so without releasing the reference acquired by dmabufget(). Any unprivileged renderD client passing a non-vmwgfx prime fd through the DRMVMWGBSURFACEREF{,EXT} path leaks one dmabuf reference per call and indefinitely pins the foreign exporter's GEM resources. Funnel the error path through the existing dmabufput() so the reference is always dropped.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips. Exploitation requires access to the vmwgfx DRM interface.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the resource leak?
An unprivileged renderD client must submit a non-vmwgfx PRIME file descriptor through the DRM_VMW_GB_SURFACE_REF or DRM_VMW_GB_SURFACE_REF_EXT path. Each triggering call leaks one dma_buf reference and can keep the foreign exporter’s GEM resources pinned indefinitely.
Is this an information disclosure or privilege-escalation issue?
The provided information describes a resource-retention issue: leaked dma_buf references indefinitely pin foreign GEM resources. It does not state that the flaw allows information disclosure, code execution, or privilege escalation.
